Alphonso C. Gilliard was born January 14, 1944, in Palmetto, Florida to the late Roosevelt Clark Carnes, Sr. and the late Mildred Dicks.
Alphonso grew up in Miami and attended the Dorsey Skills School there. The latter part of his lifewas spent in Palmetto, Florida, where he worked for Well Kraft and Donzi Boat Companies for many years, but he worked recently for Precision Boat Company.
He was a member of the Resurrected Power Church of God where he served as Minister of Music for thirteen years.
He enjoyed singing, playing the guitar, playing the piano, and of course, dancing.
(He could have taught James Brown some dance steps; that’s how good he danced!)
Alphonso leaves to mourn his passing sixteenchildren: Joseph Gilliard, Major Gilliard(Peggie),Beverly Carnes, Alonzo ”Craig”Carnes, Maurice Carnes, Cedric Carnes, Kevin Mitchell, Keith Gilliard, Katrina Johnson(Willie), Alicia Gilliard, Bridget Gilliard, Becky Daniels, Athena Gilliard, Joshua Hunter, Shelless Bellamy, and Dwayne Fobbs. Two of his children preceded him in death: Tangela “Tan” Gilliard and Temika Fobbs.
He had ten brothers; five of them(Lewis W. Carnes, Roosevelt Clark Carnes, Jr. Eddie L. Carnes, Alvin M. Carnes, and James Montgomery) preceded him in death. His other brothers are Henry Montgomery, Willie Bean, Michael Bean; all of Miami, Florida; Lorenzo L. Carnes and Ray A.Carnes of Palmetto, Florida.
He had eleven sisters; one of them(Julie Bean) preceded him in death. His other sisters are Ruby Montgomery, Patricia Bean, Helen Dicks, Jennifer Dicks, Charlene Dicks, Amanda Ford, Linda Carnes, Yvonne Presha, Rosalyn Thomas, and Evelyn Randall; a loving step-mother, Mrs. Minnie Lee Dozier Pinkard Carnes, who preceded him in death and a very caring step-father, Mr. Charles Dicks, who preceded him in death. Alphonso was the grandfather of thirty-one, and great-grandfather of twenty-nine. He had two sisters-in-law: Mrs. Estelle Carnes of Palmetto, and Mrs. Sonia Bean of Miami; four brothers-in-law: Mr. Edward Ealy of Miami, Florida; Mr. Henry Presha, Mr. Steven Randall, and Mr. Carlton Thomas all of Palmetto, Florida. He had a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and special friends, Min. Samuel Simmons and Min. Charles Williams.
