James Alphonso Brown of Palmetto, Florida passed away on Tuesday morning, January 12, 2021 at Westminster Point Pleasant Assisted Living Facility in Bradenton Florida. Son,Elston and daughter, Darlyne Brown were by his side as he went to heaven at 8:52am. James Brown was born on December 15, 1925 and raised in Palmetto. James Brown’s father Richard was the foreman of D. M. Courtney Farms where his family worked, and he was born. James worked the farm with other family members as he grew up and was educated in the neighborhood churches. After he graduated from Memorial High School, James went to Bethune Cookman College (University) in Daytona Beach, Florida. There he met his future wife Elaine Horne. James and Elaine were married in Daytona Beach in 1959. James earned a bachelor’s degree in Social Science Education in 1950. He severed in the Korean War from 1950 to 1951. After the war he and his wife Elaine Horne Brown both began teaching careers at Lincoln Memorial High School in Palmetto, Florida around 1955. After integration in 1969, James taught at Bayshore Middle School for several years and retired from Harllee Middle School. He taught for 33 years in the School District of Manatee County.
The services for the late James Alphonso Brown are as follows: There will be 2 viewings, Friday January 22, 2021 from 5pm-7pm, and Saturday morning from 9:30am -10:30am. Both viewings will be located at Turner Chapel AME, 317 11th Street West Palmetto, FL. Mask wearing, and social distancing are required at all times. Saturday January 23, 2021, there will be a gravesite service at Skyway Memorial 5200 US HWY 19 N, Palmetto, FL at 11:00am. There will not be a repast after the service.
