Obituary

Ms. Katie Elizabeth Poag passed away on June 16, 2023 after a short battle with cancer.

Katie was born to Albert Poag and Elouise F McDowell [Poag] on May 27th 1951 in Chester, South Carolina. She was the eldest child. She attended and graduated high school in Florida.

Katie migrated to New York City where she attended City College. She married the late Ruben Davis. She became mother to three boys whom she affectionately called Big Vinnie,  Champ and Fatman. Katie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, big sister and auntie.

Katie faced challenges in her life that became opportunities that led her to her greatest passion— which was helping people. Katie became a counselor, an advocate, an advisor, and a friend to those in need. She worked as a substance-abuse counselor in the New York City shelter system. Later on, she  went to work with the nonprofit group Common ground. She helped get hundreds of people off the streets and got them the help they needed. Whether it was housing, medical or financial assistance. She retired from Common Ground in 2015.

Katie's service and dedication to people began many years ago when she became the best big sister. Katie was a protector, and advisor, a confidant, and a problem solver. She was smart, witty, funny, resilient and definitely sarcastic. No one could tell a story like her.  She was also wonderful cook. The thing she was greatest at, was keeping one secret— and that secret was HER AGE. Katie was very family oriented. She loved kids and her family more than anything. She was everyones favorite sister and everyones favorite aunt.  Her guidance and wisdom will forever be cherished and appreciated.

In her retirement, she returned to Florida and settled down in Bradenton. She began taking care of family, restoring relationships and creating friendships. She fought the good fight until the very end.  Katie was called by the Lord on June 16, 2023 to take rest in her final home.

Katie Elizabeth Poag was the matriarch of the Poag family and her legacy will never be forgotten.

She was preceded in death by her parents Eloise Wiggins [Poag] and Albert Poag. Her eldest son Vincent Poag. Brother Avon Poag and sister Vanessa Randall.

She leaves to mourn, her longtime domestic partner Matthew brown. Her sons, Sharond Poag and Jamaal Davis. Daughter-in-law Anthea Poag. Her Grandchildren, Vincent Kelley, Sharond Levious Poag,  Silas Sharond Poag. Kamaal Davis, and Jamara Davis. Her brothers, James Poag and Connard Poag. Her sisters, Theresa Poag, Kim Worley, Belinda Worley, Latonya Worley, Enola Ottley and Veronica Boose…

A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends….. Too many of which to name.
