Lula Calhoun Obituary

Lula Mae Calhoun born to George, Sr. and Lucille Cheaves on December 18, 1934 in Griffin, Georgia. She was the oldest of 13 children.
Lula attended the schools of Manatee County. She was employed at Manatee Memorial Hospital for many years and then employed with Manatee Pediatrics where she retired after 23 years of service.
Lula married Johnnie Calhoun, Sr. on January 1, 1955 and to this union five children were born.
Lula was known for her cooking and hospitality. Her love and Christian attitude drew many to her. She was a mother figure to many. Her slogan was “I love you and there aint nothing you can do about it.”
She was preceded in death by her son Gary Calhoun; parents, George, Sr. and Lucille Cheaves; Sisters, Ciller Hammonds and Shirley Johnson; Brothers, George Cheaves, Jr., and Jack Cheaves.
Lula is survived by her husband, Johnnie Calhoun, Sr; Two daughters, Cynthia Rountree (Marshall) and Gwendolyn Long (Desmond); two Sons, Johnnie, Jr. (Pearl) and Bruce; two Sisters, Iona Gavin and Betty Al-Ghani (Karim); five Brothers, Alex Cheaves, Sr. (Veronica), Thaaddeus Cheaves (Tiki); Richard Cheaves, Sr. (Mattie), Willie Cheaves, Sr. and Michael Cheaves; Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren; Great Great Grandchildren; Special Friend Ola Shepperd; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and an extended group of children, and friends.  Visitation is 4-7PM, Friday, January 14, 2022 at 11th Street Church of Christ 513 11th Street W, Palmetto, FL.
