Shunya Mays

Shunya De’Trelle Mays, affectionately known as “Shawn” was born in Harlem, New York on August 25, 1964, to Samuel and Eunice Mays. We, her brother and sisters welcomed Shawn into our home. We had not had a baby in 10 years. She was a delightful joy and kept us on our toes.
Shawn attended the public schools of New York City. She later attended The Hyde School in Bath, Maine and graduated from there in 1983. She then took courses at Manhattan City College for 2 years. She attended Kelly Temple Church of God in Christ in Harlem, New York. Afterwards, Shawn joined the New York City Police Department operating as a 9-11 citywide dispatcher. She remained there until she became ill. She loved her job and became close to many of the people that worked there. They were her family away from home.
Shawn was a lovable and jovial person. She would laugh out loud while watching the Honeymooners, and she would talk back to Horatio while watching CSI Miami. Shawn’s voice was very melodic, and we loved to hear her sing with her beautiful voice. She was a member of the American Spirit Singing Ensemble that went over the northeast spreading joy. Shawn also loved the voice of Luther Vandross and bought every cd that was published. She was very fond of her nieces and nephews, and she gave each and every one of them a nickname. She delighted in buying them gifts and she always purchased the best cards.

Shawn was preceded in death by, parents, Samuel and Eunice Mays and brother Essick Aubrey Mays.
